Sarahme Akoomalik
Expert Seamstress & Educator
Sarahme Akoomalik was raised by her grandmother, Martha Akoomalik, a wise and trusted elder who taught Sarahme from a young age how to work with skins and learn the skills needed to be a woman. For most of her adult life Sarahme has worked as an educator, mentoring young people in this wisdom. Sarahme particularly likes working with younger children and is employed at Mittimatalik elementary school. Sarahme joined MAMC in 2016 and has been working as both producer and artist to help preserve and revive sealskin sewing in her community. Also with this double-role, Sarahme has also been directing MAMC's language work, sharing her expertise in Inuktitut sealskin sewing terminology.
