Sisters start skinning a fresh sealskin
Qikiqtani General Hospital, Iqaluit
Nunavut, Canada
June 2018 ongoing
In June 2018 we installed Anaanavut Qisingit (a 'slow tv’ installation with 8.5 hours of footage) in the Qiqiktani General Hospital Clinic Waiting Room in Iqaluit, Nunavut. This 3-part film features the work of seamstresses Koopa Kippomee, Sarahme Akoomalik and the late Paomee Komangapik. An opening was held for hospital staff to celebrate this installation, catered with country food prepared on site. The installation has since expanded to include to more MAMC productions including Uiguaqtuq: The Hidden Stitch and Irnivik: Airing Frame . These are playing in the Emergency Waiting Room, and Rehabilitation Medicine Waiting Room respectively.
This is an exciting installation for MAMC, exploring the meditative and healing potential of sealskin sewing. The exhibition has been run in collaboration with staff from the Department of Health, Government of Nunavut.
